17/05/2012 11:01 AM

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - An aide to the leader of the Democratic U.S. Senate Harry Reid told Reuters that Reid will ask the Board to approve a new set of oil and economic sanctions on Thursday to increase pressure on Iran to compel it to abandon its nuclear program.

The focus of sanctions on foreign banks that take over deals to cover the national oil companies and carriers of the Iran and include actions to address gaps in the existing sanctions.

The move comes before negotiations begin on 23 May in Baghdad between Iran and world powers on Tehran's nuclear program.

He described the Republican aide in Congress the amendments to the package of sanctions as a "meaningful" and said the bill could have implications for the Baghdad talks.

The aide who is expected to favor Republicans asked Reid to proceed with sanctions "will be important to monitor the reaction of Iran."

A Democratic aide said the bill is a modified version of the project in February, approved by the Banking Commission of the Senate. He pointed out that the draft amended law was strongly supported by the Committee of the American Israel Public Affairs, a lobbying group a strong pro-Israel.

The Reid bill to the Senate in March for the "unanimous approval" in raising the voice, vote for him but he failed because some Republicans asked for amendments to such sanctions on companies that insure their trade with Iran.

The project includes the average sanctions on companies that supply communications equipment used to control dissidents. He added, saying he was the Associate also includes non-binding expressions urges the government of President Barack Obama to punish the companies that insure their shipments of Iranian oil.

The House of Representatives controlled by Republicans and agreed to its version of the new draft penal code in December. And if the Senate approved the amended draft to the two chambers would have to agree on how to resolve differences between the two projects.
