"Fouad Masoum will take the post after resignation of deputy prime minister Barham Saleh," a source close to Nouri al-Maliki's office told FNA on the condition of anonymity. The source added that Fouad Masoum has yet to accept the post due to his old age. Iraqi President Jalal Talabani has stressed the necessity for Masoum to accept the post, the source noted. The source also said that Iraqi Minister of Water Resources "Latif Rashid" is another Kurd candidate for the post. The Iraqi government on August 20 officially accepted resignation of Barham Saleh. Saleh has been seen by Western diplomats as one of the most progressive and professional members of the Iraqi government in which he has been a central part of a recent push to attract foreign investment to the war-torn country. The July 25 elections in Kurdistan, which saw Iraqi Kurdish president Massud Barzani comfortably re-elected to his post, has paved the way for Saleh to become the northern region's prime minister. Massud Barzani and Barham Saleh swore-in as President and Prime Minister of the autonomous region of Kurdistan on August 21. |
