Iranian Deputy Minister of Oil Javad Oji said that Iran has obtained permits from Iraq to export natural gas via Iraq to Syria and onward to other Mediterranean countries.
Oji said that the gas will go through the sixth network of pipelines under construction. The pipelines will have a capacity for 110 million cubic meters of gas daily, with 50 million cubic meters to be used for domestic consumption. Iraq would need 7-10 million cubic meters of natural gas for its electricity turbines.
[No deadline was given for the completion of the pipeline network, and hence the question of the UN and U.S. sanctions on the Iran energy sector remains moot.]
