Former U.S. Trade Representatives oppose currency reform
Posted on 21 September 2010
Astounding. Eight former U.S. Trade Representatives sent a letter to Congress asking “not to use unilateral legislation to force China to revalue its currency.”
No wonder we have a record trade deficit. Eight of the folks who used to negotiate these trade deals oppose doing something effective for the United States. Clinton’s USTR’s, Mickey Kantor and Charlene Barshefsky, and one of Bush’s USTR’s, Susan Schwab, all oppose addressing China’s currency cheating. Whose side are they on? Their past judgment has proven disastrous. Why listen to them now?
Rob Portman, currency Republican candidate for Senate in Ohio, is not on the letter. Portman was a U.S. Trade Representative under Bush II. He has not said where he stands. CPA has sent him a questionnaire asking if he supports the currency manipulation bill, but he has not responded. Ohio voters need to know before November 2.
