Preliminary estimates indicate that Iraq possessed stockpiles estimated at 112 trillion cubic feet of gas, but that 700 million cubic feet a day of it burning and wasting due to lack of infrastructure.

The Iraqi Council of Ministers agreed in June of last year 2010, to open the door of investment associated gas produced in the southern oil fields near Basra, at a cost of up to $ 12 billion, the government owns a share of 51 percent.

Nov 15 (Reuters) - Iraq's cabinet approved on Tuesday a $17 billion deal with Royal Dutch Shell and Mitsubishi to captured flared gas at southern oilfields, a government spokesman said.

Iraq and the company initialled the 25-year deal in July. Capturing flared gas is considered vital to ramping up electricity production in Iraq.
