BAGHDAD, Feb. 15 (AKnews) - The presidency of the Iraqi Council of Representatives has decided to double the penalty against absent representatives from 500,000 IQD ($429) to 1m IQD ($858) per day and replace those who are absent for more than 10 consecutive meetings without a legitimate excuse.
Iraqi Parliament, Parlamani IraqRepresentative Muhammad al-Khalidi said the presidency made the changes to reduce absences that lead to a lack of quorum.
The presidency has been forced to postpone several sessions because of an attendance level lower than the specified quota, the most recent cancellation being about a week ago.
The presidency of the council agreed with the heads of the parliamentary blocs at beginning of the current electoral cycle to deduct 500,000 IQD from a representative's monthly salary for each session missed.
Khalidi said that some of those who do not attend the council "don't care for any fine imposed on them now as representatives" because they still receive salaries from jobs and other positions of responsibility.
