03/12/2012 - 12:12

Revealed Kuwaiti diplomatic sources, on Monday, that Kuwait agreed to drop all the debts owed by Iraq for the latter's consent to the demarcation of the border with Kuwait in accordance with the resolutions of the United Nations, as pointed out that the Iraqi Prime Minister Nuri al-Maliki will sign this agreement formally during his upcoming visit to Kuwait, then submit it to parliament for approval.

The sources said "Alsumaria News" that "both Iraq and Kuwait agreed in recent weeks that the fall of Kuwait all the debts owed by Iraq, but compensation, compared to acknowledge Iraq Kuwait's borders according to UN Resolution 883 of 1993 in addition to the recognition of places of border markers by been erected between the two countries. "

The sources said that "This agreement has been settled in during the visit by Iraqi Foreign Minister Hoshyar Zebari to Kuwait at the end of last February," and added that "Zebari Download to Kuwaiti officials Iraqi initiative to cancel debt owed by Iraq, which exceed $ 120 billion for government approval Iraqi border demarcation and recognition marks the current border of Kuwait and the granting of investment in Iraq. "

Him and Iraqi Foreign Minister Hoshyar Zebari, during a visit to Kuwait on 29 February, the Emir of Kuwait Sabah Al-Ahmad Al-Jaber Al-Sabah, an official invitation from President Jalal Talabani, to attend the Arab Summit to be held in Baghdad at the end of next March, as discussed with his Kuwaiti counterpart Sheikh Sabah Khaled morning to resolve the outstanding issues in the relations between the two countries and the visit of Prime Minister Nuri al-Maliki's visit to Kuwait.

The sources indicated that "the agreement on the text that you also pay the debts of Iraq, Kuwait for Kuwaiti companies to contribute, such as oil tankers and cargo from its own account on the topic to be put on the media that Iraq is a shot of that debt."

The sources pointed out that "the Iraqi Prime Minister Nuri al-Maliki, who is expected to arrive in Kuwait a few days after an official visit to sign the agreement, that passes through the Parliament to his parliamentary bloc for approval and therefore the agreement is valid."

The sources confirmed that "the Iraqi side showed through its officials who visited Kuwait recently, in preparation for Maliki's visit, his willingness to fully finish the outstanding issues with Kuwait, especially in light of developments and crises in the region," and considered that "Iraq does not want to be in isolation from its surroundings after the fall of Syria and thus he began to think seriously to resolve the outstanding issues with Kuwait to gain an important gateway to the Gulf. "

The sources said that "the agreement of Kuwait Iraqi did not address the issue of compensation as related to the UN resolutions," but it showed that "if it showed Iraq a serious move in this agreement, the Kuwait recommendations will be a positive affinity Iraq with this file, including in the interest of Iraq and relieve him of the impact of those decisions. "

Preparing Prime Minister Nuri al-Maliki to visit Kuwait in a few days to discuss outstanding issues, including border demarcation and reparations and debts owed by Iraq as well as opportunities for cooperation between the two countries, according to the words of government spokesman Ali al-Dabbagh, while calling the foreign ministers of the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC), in March 5, the current Iraq to complete the implementation of international resolutions issued in favor of Kuwait, most notably the completion of the issue of maintenance of border markers in implementation of resolution 833.

The Kuwaiti Foreign Minister Sabah Al-Khalid Al-Sabah announced on January 16, 2012, that the political leadership is keen to develop a road map to help Iraq implement its international obligations, and revealed the proposal Kuwaiti display on the side of Iraq that are invested part of the compensation in Iraq, as noted that entered Kuwait with Iraq in a housing project to compensate for Iraqi farmers who had their property included within the Kuwaiti border when the border demarcation in accordance with UN Security Council Resolution 833, was assigned to the Kuwait Fund for Arab Economic Development in collaboration with a consulting office for the development of global perceptions of the project.

The UN Security Council issued Resolution 833 in 1993, which provides for the demarcation of the border between Iraq and Kuwait, which has a length of 216 km through the formation of an international commission to demarcate the border between the two parties, which was rejected by the regime of President Saddam Hussein first, but it was approved by the the end of 1994 following international pressure, Iraqi officials insist that the border demarcation between the two countries were by force, and led to the deduction of Iraqi territory in terms of Safwan and Umm Qasr area, as well as reducing the area of territorial waters.

Title a bit misleading. Sounds like Kuwait just forgave the debt until I hit this sentence--The sources said that "This agreement has been settled in during the visit by Iraqi Foreign Minister Hoshyar Zebari to Kuwait at the end of last February," and added that "Zebari Download to Kuwaiti officials Iraqi initiative to cancel debt owed by Iraq, which exceed $ 120 billion for government approval Iraqi border demarcation and recognition marks the current border of Kuwait and the granting of investment in Iraq. "

Didn't think Kuwait would give in without getting something back. If this is true looking better and better for June. Two reports are due this month to the Security Council. What should be the final report on the oil for food program and the UNAMI report. Would expect that if progress has been made or if the Kuwait issues are a done deal that would be expressed in the UNAMI report.
