Foreign Minister Continues Talks in New York with UN Security Council Members

Foreign Minister Hoshyar Zebari and his delegation of senior advisers and experts from the government and Foreign Ministry continued talks and consultations with permanent and non-permanent members of the Security Council and h experts of the Iraq Office in the United Nations' Secretariat on July 14, 2009.

The minister met today with U.S. Deputy Permanent Representative, Ambassador Alejandro, and the Permanent Representative of the Russian Federation, Ambassador Vitaly Jorquen, Permanent Representative of Japan, Ambassador Yukio Takasu and Permanent Representative of Austria, Ambassador Thomas Mayer Hating.

During these discussions of individual talks, the review of Iraq's stance on the revision of the UN resolutions imposed on Iraq under Chapter VII and the vision of the Iraqi government on the report of the Secretary-General to the Security Council and the mechanisms required to follow the distribution of decision on members of the Security Council in the coming days.

The members of the Security Council expressed their understanding of Iraq's stance on the review and that the time has come to look seriously and transparently for the best way to get end Iraq from the provisions of Chapter VII and meeting pending international resolutions. During the meetings, consultation and exchange of views on next steps were discussed in addition to communicating with members of the Security Council after the report of the United Nations Secretary-General .

Iraq, UN discuss Chapter VII issue

In New York, Iraqi Foreign Minister Hosheyar Zebari discussed with UN Secretary General Ban Ki Moon Iraqi Government’s stand towards International sanctions imposed on the country by virtue of UN Charter Chapter VII. Zebari asserted that Iraq has committed to many international restrictions including Iraqi-Kuwaiti issue stressing the necessity to include a timeline for removing Iraq from Chapter VII in the report to be submitted by the UN Secretary General to the Security Council.
For his part, Ban Ki Moon said he understands Iraq’s determination to be exempted from Chapter VII and regain its natural and legal stand in the International Community.
