UNITED NATIONS, Aug 04, 2009 (Xinhua via COMTEX) -- The UN Security Council is moving to lift sanctions imposed on Iraq after Saddam Hussein's invasion of Kuwait, the British ambassador to the UN told reporters here on Tuesday. "This is an opportunity ... to progressively remove those constraints on Iraq but it will require some careful preparation," said Sir John Sawers, who holds the rotating presidency of the Council for the month of August. "That is work which is now starting but don't hold your breath, it may take a little while before it comes to fruition," he added. On Friday, the Security Council is to discuss the sanctions, known as the Saddam era resolutions. In part, Council members expect Iraq to sign up to international norms concerning its weapons of mass destruction.
