United Nations: the elections an important milestone in Iraq's progress towards democracy

The Secretary-General of the United Nations Ban Ki-moon expressed his belief that the upcoming Iraqi elections will be "an important milestone in Iraq's progress towards democracy."


He added in the last quarterly report to the Security Council of the United Nations to VII of the March election will provide "an opportunity for millions of Iraqis to exercise their right to vote and elect a government that will shape the future of their country for the next four years," stressing the need to make every possible effort to ensure that voter turnout will be a broad and comprehensive as possible.


The Security Council requested the Secretary-General of the United Nations in its resolution number 1883 to a 2009 report to the Council every three months to fulfill the responsibilities of the OSCE mission to provide international assistance to Iraq. The recent report of the eighth of February is the second by Ban Ki-moon pursuant to that resolution.


As stated in paragraph sixty-sixth session of the new report that while it is still the technical preparations for the Iraqi elections going on, "there are still many challenges ahead of us crouched. First and foremost, we must be able to the electorate to vote in an environment largely free from intimidation and violence , "according to his words. In this regard, Ban Ki-moon said that armed groups may attempt to "violent attacks against civilians and government institutions in order to disrupt the electoral process."
