Iraq’s ambassador to Austria and Permanent Representative to UN organizations in Vienna, Tarek Akreyi he was handed three letters from the Iraqi Foreign Minister to the Director General of the International Atomic Energy Agency formally requesting to inform the UN Security Council to cooperate fully with the Agency and signed the protocols to prevent the production of banned weapons and acceptance operations inspection with a view to lifting international restrictions imposed on him.
Akreyi’s ambassador told reporters on the sidelines of the Board of Governors of the International Atomic Energy Agency is currently being held that Baghdad made formal requests to the IAEA in this regard and is proceeding with its efforts to get rid of the sanctions issued after Iraq’s invasion of Kuwait in 1990.
The Akreyi to the UN Security Council recently issued a decision which did not respond to Iraq’s request for him out of Chapter VII sanctions, but only welcomed the positive response and Iraq signed the protocols to prevent the production of banned weapons, and advised him to accept the periodic inspection and ratification of the conventions is obliged not to renew the production of nuclear weapons and chemical and biological weapons.
Revealed Akreyi about contacts with the IAEA and Member States in the Security Council and the Arab countries concerned over the removal of international sanctions imposed on Iraq, noting that Iraq had told the news agency after signing the additional protocol of the inspection that he was ready to apply the Protocol provisionally pending the ratification by the Iraqi parliament and its entry into force formally pledged not to develop nuclear weapons or chemical or biological weapons again.
The Security Council has stated in its recent resolution that it could consider lifting restrictions on civilian nuclear activities after the Iraqi regime’s invasion of Kuwait in 1990 if ratified by Iraq on the document known as the Additional Protocol to the International Atomic Energy Agency among other steps.
The council also demanded in its resolution which was approved by all countries of the Security Council and the 15-nation International Atomic Energy Agency and the Vienna-based steps to inform the Council for Iraq to implement the additional inspection protocol.
The Iraqi diplomat revealed that he will meet with Director General of the IAEA, Yukiya Amano, this week again to get to know what steps to take in order to issue a recommendation paves the way for UN Security Council for a decision to drive Iraq from Chapter VII sanctions of the United Nations and allow it to benefit from corn in the peaceful purposes, especially in electricity generation and treatment of serious diseases.
