BAGHDAD / Aswat al-Iraq: The
Iraqi Council of Ministers decided to announce June 30, 2009, as a
holiday throughout Iraq for the occasion of the U.S. forces withdrawal
from the country’s cities, the official spokesperson of the Iraqi
government said Tuesday.
“The decision
was made during the council’s 23rd session on Tuesday,” Ali all-Dabbagh
said in a release received by Aswat al-Iraq news agency.
“Central festivals will be held on June 29, 2009, for this occasion,” he said.
According
to the Iraq-U.S. long-term security pact, U.S. forces will withdraw
from Iraqi cities, suburbs and districts by June 30, 2009, as a step
toward a complete withdrawal from Iraq before 2012.
The release
explained that during the same session, the council “authorized the
Iraqi Trade Ministry to purchase sugar and tea from the local market to
fulfill the shortage in these two materials in June 2009 with respect
