BAGHDAD / Aswat al-Iraq: Iraqi
Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki on Saturday said the “acts of terrorism”
that have recently hit the country, particularly the capital Baghdad,
will not deter his government from regaining full sovereignty over Iraq.
The
remark came during a speech to mark the sixth anniversary of the death
of the founder of the Supreme Islamic Iraqi Council (SIIC), Sayed
Mohammed Baqir al-Hakim.
Over the past few days, several bombings ripped through the capital Baghdad and left dozens of people killed or wounded.
On
November 27, 2008, the Iraqi Parliament passed a security pact with the
United States, known as the Status-of-Forces Agreement (SOFA), 10 days
after the Iraqi cabinet approved it with an overwhelming majority.
U.S.
combat forces are scheduled to leave the Iraqi cities and districts by
the end of this month within preparations for withdrawal from Iraq by
August 2010, to be completed by the end of 2011 commensurate with U.S.
President Barack Obama’s plan.
The anniversary event was attended by
Iraqi President Jalal al-Talabani, his deputy Adel Abdulmahdi,
Parliament Speaker Iyad al-Samarraie; the head of the Sunni Endowments,
Abdulghafoor al-Samarraie; and several parliamentarians.
Sayed
Mohammed Baqir al-Hakim was one of the foremost Twelver Shiite Muslim
leaders in Iraq until his assassination in a bombing in Najaf. He was
the son of Grand Ayatollah Muhsin al-Hakim Tabatabai and al-Hajja
Fawzieh Hassan Bazzi.
