Firms qualified for second Iraq oil bid round

Dec 8 (Reuters) - Forty-five companies are qualified to
compete on Dec. 11-12 in Iraq's second bidding round since the
U.S.-led invasion in 2003.
Iraq sits on the world's third-largest oil reserves and the
untapped fields on offer are among the world's biggest. The
prospect of competing for the few remaining, cheap-to-pump
conventional oil reserves on the planet has attracted the
world's largest energy firms.
Baghdad has barred one of the firms, China's Sinopec
(0386.HK), from participation after the Chinese firm bought a
company with a stake in oil deals in Iraq's northern Kurdish
region. Iraq has blacklisted firms with deals with the Kurdish
Regional Government (KRG), preventing them from competing for
deals in the rest of the country. Baghdad's oil ministry sees
oil deals signed by foreign oil firms and the KRG as illegal.
That leaves a maximum of forty-four companies to compete for
the contracts. Thirty-two companies both qualified and paid to
compete in the first auction in June.
