The northern province of Quang Ninh is calling for more investments from the Japanese companies, according to an official from the provincial People’s Committee.

Nhu Thi Hong Lien, vice chairwoman of the committee, was quoted by the agency as saying that the province is encouraging Japanese firms to boost investments in electronics, hi-tech, infrastructure, energy and seafood processing.

Lien made the statement at an investment promotion conference held by the Vietnamese Ministry of Planning and Investment and Mizuho Bank in Tokyo.

At the meeting, Abe Hiroshi from Mizuho Bank said Vietnam is attractive to Japanese investors for its advantages such as political stability and cheap and abundant work force.

Japanese firms have so far registered to directly invest US$11.3 million in six projects in the province.

Japan is the biggest ODA provider for Quang Ninh with a pledged sum of US$300 million, including US$111 million for environment protection in Ha Long City, US$90 million for Van Tien bridge construction and US$78 million for Cai Lan port.

Exports of Quang Ninh province to Japan have continuously risen over the years. In 2009, the province fetched US$84.6 million from exports to the market.

The number of Japanese tourists to Quang Ninh province surged three times from 2006 to 38,200 last year.

Vietnam and Japan will sign a note of exchange for a JPY28.39 billion official development assistance (ODA) later this week, earlier than scheduled for September.

Of the sum, JPY10 billion will go to climate change adaptation projects and the rest for the construction of the East-West economic corridor and drainage and environment improvement projects in Ho Chi Minh City.

“The move is aimed to help Vietnam fight the climate change as it becomes a urgent problem for all countries,” Ambassador Mitsuo Sakaba to Vietnam told the Dau tu (Investment) newspaper on May 12.

He added that corridor and drainage and environment improving in Ho Chi Minh City projects need more funds to complete on schedule.

The Japanese government is considering providing funds for Lach Huyen international gateway seaport in July, Hoa Lac universe center and Hue-Danang-Quang Ngai expressway, the ambassador attributed.

At the Consultative Group Meeting held in Hanoi on December 3-4 last year, Japan pledged to provide Vietnam with $1.64 billion in ODA this year.
