Vietnam to spend 600 mln dlrs on airport

HANOI (AFP) - - Vietnam's Prime Minister Nguyen Tan Dung has approved a plan to spend up to 600 million dollars upgrading Cam Ranh domestic airport into an international one, the government has said.

Under the plan, the airport, near the tourist resort of Nha Trang, will be expanded to give it a capacity of 5.5 million passengers and 100,000 tonnes of cargo per year, said a report on the government's website.
By 2030 this will rise to 8 million passengers and 200,000 tonnes of cargo, the report said.
Airport officials said the facility currently handles around a million passengers every year.
Cam Ranh international airport will be located on an area of more than 650 hectares (1,600 acres) and be used for both civil and military purposes, the Internet report added.

Vietnam Government: PM OKs VND10.5 Trillion International Airport Development Project



HANOI -(Dow Jones)- Vietnamese Prime Minister Nguyen Tan Dung has approved a VND10.5 trillion ($601 million) plan to develop an international airport in central Vietnam, the government said Friday in a statement.
The Cam Ranh Airport, currently a small domestic airport, will eventually cover 657.9 hectares in Khanh Hoa province, 440 kilometers north of Ho Chi Minh City, the government said in a statement.
The airport is expected to be capable of receiving 5.5 million passengers and 100,000 metric tons of cargo a year by 2020, and eight million passengers and 200,000 tons of cargo by 2030, it said.
