SIIC Official: Maliki Likely to Join Iraqi National Alliance

TEHRAN (FNA)- An Iraqi top Shiite figure predicted that the country's Prime Minister Nouri Al-Maliki is likely to join a newly formed bloc called the "Iraqi National Alliance".

"Based on the remarks by those with close links with Nouri Maliki, the possibility has increase for the Iraqi Prime Minister's coalition with the new block," a member of the Supreme Iraqi Islamic Council (SIIC) Seyed Forat al-Shar told FNA on Sunday.

He added that practical moves by Maliki in recent days were indications of Maliki's possible coalition with the Iraqi National Alliance.

Al-Shar also noted that Maliki's tendency has increased even after the death of the SIIC Head, Abdul Aziz Hakim.

Abdul Aziz Hakim, who was under medical treatment in a Tehran hospital for lung cancer, died on Wednesday evening.

Al-Shar further highlighted the importance of the political mediators' role in this regard.

Meantime, he said that Maliki's Dawa Party plays a major role in the final decision for coalition with the alliance, and expressed the hope that the Dawa party would make a proper decision over Maliki's alliance with the newly formed block.

The coalition will replace the United Iraqi Alliance, which won control of the parliament in the last elections in December 2005.

The list includes several Sunnis, comprising a smaller Awakening Council faction from the western Anbar province that won several seats in provincial elections earlier this year.

Former Deputy Prime Minister Ahmad Chalabi, who leads the secular Iraqi National Congress, is also in the new alliance, as is former Prime Minister Ibrahim al-Jaafari.
