JUST have to Love NASA updates:

UPDATE 8/4/11: This morning's M9-class eruption propelled a bright CME toward Earth. Moving at an estimated speed of 1950 km/s, the cloud is expected to sweep up two earlier CMEs already en route. Analysts at the GSFC Space Weather Lab say the combined CME should reach Earth on August 5th at 13:55 UT plus or minus 7 hours. "The impact on Earth is likely to be major: the estimated maximum geomagnetic activity index level Kp is 7 (Kp ranges from 0 - 9). The flanks of the CME may also impact STEREO A, Mars and Mercury/MESSENGER."

A comment that was posted:

Actually there was one on Aug 1, one yesterday, and 2 today .. one in middle of the night and one this AM around 8 am . So this is 4 CME's arriving at once and seems they pushed the date of arrival up as the 2 today moved them along .. sorta like the info on the carrington event, that one was 2 at once , the 2nd pushing the first ahead of scheduled arrival .

Last time we had a X flare...it caused Japan 9.0...I hate to think what this will do..but I'll be looking for a 9.0 again.

Let's hope it happens somewhere uninhabited....thx MCK

Here is what the carrington event was all about:

http://science.nasa.gov/science-news/science-at-nasa/2008/06may_carringtonflare/

Chevy I was explaining what was to happen to a friend of mine in California this evening...I joked saying "Boy, wouldn't it be a kicker if these flares knock out the grid and "they" used it as a excuse to go to the new banking system" then I said "No wait it knocks the FEDs system and "they" used it as a excuse to transfer over to the US Treasury system"....ROFL!!! we laughed our tails off...ok I know it's reaching but funny anyway.

MAJOR SOLAR FLARE: This morning at 0805 UT, the magnetic canopy of sunspot 1263 erupted, producing a powerful X7-class solar flare: SDO movie. The blast caused a brief HF radio blackout on the daylit side of Earth. SOHO coronagraphs show a CME emerging from the blast site. At most, Earth would received a glancing blow from the flank of the cloud on or about August 11th; a complete miss is more likely, however. Stay tuned for updates.
SPACEWEATHER.COM

Massive X6.9 Solar Flare:
The largest solar flare of Cycle 24 just took place at 08:05 UTC and it registered a whopping X6.9. The source was Sunspot 1263 which is nearing the Western Limb. Because of its location, any large explosions may not be fully earth directed. When watching new video images from the STEREO website, it appears the CME is less intense than the one caused by the M9.3 flare from last week. A minor S1 Radiation Storm is in progress.

MrsCK

Two M-Class Flares: A second M-Class flare, this time a M2.5 took place at 03:54 UTC Tuesday morning around Sunspot 1263. This is in addition to the earlier M3.5 flare which I reported on Monday afternoon. The first flare produced a small, but fast moving (2010 km/s) Coronal Mass Ejection (CME). More analysis is needed to determine if part of it is earth directed.

the second M-Class event is ongoing as of this posting and appears to be fairly long in duration. More updates to follow.

LAST time we had a X flare was March 9th that popped Japans 9.0 quake.

Now August 9th...we got a bigger X flare....quake will be???

Plus X flare is speeding up CME's...peachy!

depends on what part of the atlantic it comes from but most shorelines would get a piece of it.

Was just reading up on my earthquake geeks...they are saying yesterday was 3 quakes not just ONE!

thanx ....i felt it bigtime, but thats because I live in Richmond, VA....just down the road from mineral!
my question about 'which ones would be most affected' - my daughter is moving to Spain in 1 1/2 weeks..thank goodness she did not get the area she wanted [coastal]...but is located in inland and in an agricultural area..close to portugal. Thanx again.

The sunspot that gave us our last round of X - flares will come around and be earth facing around the 24th to 26th, interesting to say the least.

NOAA has now numbered the region that the X1.4 flare originated from as Region 1302. As mentioned prior, this is the return of old Region 1283. You may remember that 1283 produced an X2.1 on Sept. 6, and an X1.8 on Sept. 7, earlier this month.

Minor update added at 14:55 UTC on September 22:
Region 11302 (formerly S1226) produced a major long duration X1.4/2N event peaking at 11:01 UTC. An impressive full halo CME was observed in both STEREO-A and B. The CME was extremely wide and became full halo even in LASCO images. A flank impact from this CME is possible on September 25. As more of the region has rotated into view it appears to have the largest area of any sunspot group so far in cycle 24

Large Asteroid Zipping Close to Earth on Tuesday

By MARCIA DUNN AP Aerospace Writer
CAPE CANAVERAL, Fla. November 7, 2011 (AP)

An
asteroid bigger than an aircraft carrier will dart between the Earth
and moon on Tuesday — the closest encounter by such a huge rock in 35
years.

But scientists say not to worry. It won't hit.

"We're
extremely confident, 100 percent confident, that this is not a threat,"
said the manager of NASA's Near Earth Object Program, Don Yeomans. "But
it is an opportunity."

The asteroid named 2005 YU55 is being
watched by ground antennas as it approaches from the direction of the
sun. The last time it came within so-called shouting distance was 200
years ago.

Closest approach will occur at 6:28 p.m. EST Tuesday
when the asteroid passes within 202,000 miles of Earth. That's closer
than the roughly 240,000 miles between the Earth and the moon.

The moon will be just under 150,000 miles from the asteroid at the time of closest approach.

Kinda funny how this is happening, the EAS system test, and then the government bugging out again...one of them will hit us sooner or later-

glad I'm not depending on CK to drive me anywhere....would have to average like 40mph to make that distance.

These sophisticated test on in-coming bodies are to evaluate also how the alternative world/communities react and respond when news like this is leaked......either the damn thing will hit something in it's way or not! So along with EAS there's also "Pacific Wave 2011-tsunami drill" going on this week and a RED X "marks" the spot on the Aleutian Islands when you 'google earth XML file from Nasa! I will have my telescope" out tonight to 'see' what i can see!
The moon will be just under 150,000 miles from the asteroid at the time of closest approach.

NOAA Warns of Monster Solar Storm Region Facing Earth for Next Two Weeks; Fully Capable of Producing X-Class Flares

Last Thursday the sun produced an X1.9 rated solar flare that narrowly missed Earth. Although it wasn’t aimed directly at us, about 45 minutes after leaving the sun it was still powerful enough to disrupt radio communications.

Now, that same area responsible for producing the X-class flare may pose a direct threat to Earth.

National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration’s (NOAA) Space Weather Prediction Center says that the region on the sun known as AR11339 and affectionately called the “Benevolent Monster” will set its sights on Earth.

It will move into a position that poses the largest risk to our planet around November 9th, 2011 and remain on a direct line of sight with earth for the following two (2) weeks as it rotates:

Continues ...

Scientists at the federal Space Weather Prediction Center say that area is the most active part of the sun since 2005. It has dozens of sunspots, including one that is the size of 17 Earths.

“It’s still growing. The size is what blows me away.”

Thursday’s flare wasn’t aimed at Earth. However, this active region is now slowly turning toward Earth, and scientists say it will be directly facing Earth in about five days.

That storm region will only affect Earth if it shoots off flares and they hit our planet, which doesn’t always happen with stormy areas, said prediction center space scientist Joe Kunches.

The region will be facing Earth for about two weeks as it rotates, he said.

Solar flares send out bursts of electromagnetic energy that can occasionally disrupt communications and electrical systems.

Sourced Via The Intel Hub

We’ll be facing the monster starting sometime this evening into tomorrow. Considering that it has just recently ejected an X-class flare towards Earth and another towards Venus, we should consider the region to be active and fully capable of affecting our planet.

While NOAA’s warnings fall short of any imminent ‘end of the world as we know it’ event, the risk over the next two weeks of a Carrington-like event are higher now than at anytime in the last decade. The 1859 Carrington Event, caused by a solar flare, reportedly knocked out telegraph operations around the world. It is believed that such an event, were it to occur today, could potentially take down the U.S. power grid for months or years and paralyze the entire globe:

Physicist Michio Kaku:

It could paralyze the economy of the planet earth. In 1859 we had a gigantic solar storm which knocked out telegraph wires back then, 150 years ago. If that had happened today it would knock out almost all our satellites, knock out power stations, there would be food riots around the country because refrigeration would stop, airplanes would probably crash without radar.

And again, this is a once in a century, once in two centuries storm…

We do have them and we have to worry about them.

We’d be thrown back 100 years.

Source: Top Physicist Says Solar Flare Would Set Us Back 100 Years

Patrick Geryl of How to Survive 2012 contacted us recently and contributed a short video describing the potential fall out of such an event. The consequences would be devastating and would include everything from power grid failure and food shortages, to savage riots and, eventually, a meltdown of nuclear reactors across the globe.

There would be very little warning, if any, with estimates suggesting that once a solar event is detected it could take anywhere from a few minutes to a couple of days to impact earth.
