The SRSG welcomes the signature of an Electoral Code of Conduct
Baghdad, 21 February 2010 – The Special Representative of the United Nations Secretary-General for Iraq (SRSG) Ad Melkert welcomes the signature of an electoral Code of Conduct by representatives of the main political blocs, and encourages all parties and candidates who have not done so to join such initiative to ensure their commitment to the fundamental standards of a free competition and dialogue on the basis of their electoral programs.
“Of critical importance for the UN is the political context in which election campaigns are held”, stressed the SRSG, adding that it is essential that all candidates and communities be given equal opportunities and treated with respect and dignity in every stage of the electoral process and their democratic rights to elect and be elected exerted, free from any form of human rights violations, including pressure, intimidation, violence or libel.
