Qatari PM: Monetary unit to precede GCC currency

(MENAFN - The Peninsula) The Prime Minister and Foreign Minister H E Sheikh Hamad bin Jassem bin Jabor Al Thani yesterday said the central banks of the GCC countries were discussing the technical aspects of a common currency.
Addressing a news conference following his talks with German Chancellor Angela Merkel, the Premier said the euro was a model for the GCC currency.
The Gulf currency will take time, he said, adding it could take more than one or two years. He said it would start with the issuing of a monetary unit similar to the nominal European Currency Unit that preceded the euro.
