Pentagon "very nervous" over Arab-Kurdish tensions in Iraq

Politics 8/12/2009 9:01:00 AM

WASHINGTON, Aug 12 (KUNA) -- The Pentagon on Tuesday said it was "very nervous" about Arab-Kurdish tensions, following talks between Iraqi Prime Minister Nouri Al-Maliki and Kurdish region's President Masoud Barzani.Pentagon spokesman Geoff Morrell said at a briefing today the US was "heartened" by the leaders' recent meeting, but "we are very nervous, continue to be, about the overall Arab-Kurd tensions."

US officials have urged the Iraqi government and the Kurdish autonomous region to resolve their disputes before the US combat forces scheduled withdrawal from Iraq in August 2010."We are going to remain vigilant, and a certain number of US forces are required in that country until the security agreement expires, in no small measure to try to assist the Arabs and the Kurds solve some of these problems while we are still there," Morrell added.
